Section II – Program Requirements; A. Focus Areas
Eligible medium- and heavy-duty vehicle electrification technologies have been updated to focus on battery electric EVs. Fuel cell EVs are no longer included as a focus area. Proposals related to the deployment or demonstration of medium- and heavy-duty fuel cell electric vehicles for either on- or off-road transportation are directed to challenge area #5 in PON 5500 and PON 5712.
Focus Area 1) Vehicle Grid Advancements is now broken into two separate focus areas: Novel EVSE Installation and Interconnection Cost Reductions and Utilizing EVs to Improve Grid Flexibility.
The sub-focus area relating to simplified approaches to residential time-of-use and managed charging as it relates to utility programs has been removed. This sub-focus area will be re-included either as a future round or separate RFP.

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) seeks research proposals to develop or demonstrate new technologies and strategies that help overcome barriers to electric vehicle (EV) grid integration (VGI) and broader EV use in medium- and heavy-duty (MHD) vehicles. The goal of this program is to develop and demonstrate innovative technologies and operational approaches to make EV adoption more economically viable while reducing their impact on the electric grid in New York State.

This program will specifically fund Product Development and Demonstrations aimed at three primary focus areas:
Novel EVSE Installation and Interconnection Cost Reductions
Utilizing EVs to Improve Grid Flexibility
Electrifying and decarbonizing new segments of medium- and heavy-duty (MHD) vehicles

Eligibility/Qualifications Requirements/Preferences:

NYSERDA is accepting Full Proposals in the following categories:
Category 1: Product Development, Up to $1 million in NYSERDA funding per award with 50% cost share requirement
Category 2: Demonstration Projects, Up to $3 million in NYSERDA funding per award. Projects receiving up to $1,000,000 of NYSERDA funding are required to provide 50% cost-share; Category 2 projects receiving more than $1,000,000 of NYSERDA funding are required to provide 65% cost-share. For all Category 2 projects, no more than 25% of requested NYSERDA funds may be used for the purchase and/or installation of DER.
