Downtown Revitalization Initiative, Revitalize the Village of Newarkâs Canal PortDescription: One of the many projects funded through the New York State Downtown Revitalization Initiative is the revitalization of the Village’s Canal Port. The Canal Port is an active and essential node along the Erie Canal and is located in the center of the Village. The goal of this project is to revitalize the Canal Port and further connect the north and south side of the Village by making the port a year-round, outdoor multi-use gathering space. Enhancements of the port will need to be coordinated with the multiple adjacent DRI projects. The project limits include both the north and south sides of the canal and extend from North Main Street to 200 feet east of the East Avenue Bridge. The intent of extending the project limits to the east is to provide a connection with the proposed ADA-accessible kayak launch to the east of the East Avenue Bridge along with the proximate awarded DRI projects, including a hotel and conference center, as well as a health and wellness center. The proposed improvements include:
The anticipated environmental approvals include; SEQRA, SHPO review and approval, NYS Canal Corporation, Joint Permit Application (ACOE/NYSDEC) and Village of Newark site plan review and approval. The project details as developed during the DRI planning process are attached. A consultant will be retained to provide preliminary and final design and construction inspection services. The Preliminary Design tasks will include but not be limited to topographic mapping, preparation for and attendance at public information meetings and/or hearings and preparation of the Design Approval Document, environmental permitting, utility coordination, subsurface investigations if required, coordination with all project stakeholders, and the development of three proposed alternatives for the canal port. Final Design will include but not be limited to development of the preferred alternative, permitting, coordination with utilities for relocations (if necessary), and preparation of final plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) for the project.
