Land Trust Grants Program - Round 5

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets (the “Department”) invites eligible not-for-profit conservation organizations (Land Trusts) to submit proposals for financial assistance to conduct activities that will assist counties and municipalities with their agricultural and farmland protection efforts, including on-farm marketing, processing and agritourism opportunities on preserved farms.

Specifically, State funding under this grant opportunity will support local agricultural and farmland protection goals by informing owners of viable agricultural land of the mechanisms and programs available to protect their lands from conversion to non-farm uses and highlighting on-farm marketing, production and agritourism opportunities for preserved farms.   Projects will consist of outreach activities intended to reach the owners of viable agricultural land utilizing an inventory of viable agricultural lands and a screening process to identify subsets of landowners to focus on for such outreach activities.

Eligible outreach efforts shall focus on the utilization and conservation of agricultural lands using the following required project elements:

  1. an inventory of viable agricultural lands; and
  2. a screening process; and

iii.        outreach activities targeted to the landowners of inventoried parcels of viable agricultural land.

Taken together, these three inter-related project elements are intended to connect willing landowners to farmers interested in leasing or buying viable agricultural land, and to inform owners of viable agricultural land of mechanisms and available programs to protect such lands from conversion to non-farm uses.

The Department has made available $500,000 for awards to qualified environmental conservation organizations (land trusts).

After March 15th 2023, the Commissioner may award available funds to eligible land trusts.

The following general limitations apply to all applications:

  • No award shall exceed $50,000
  • Eligible Applicants must have an “Active Farmer” in service on their Board. Further details will be available in the Application.

The RFP, Grants Gateway Proposal Submission Instructions, and associated documents are available for printing from the Department’s website at under “Funding Opportunities.”
