Peer Family Advisor Services

Description:

The primary role of a Parent Advisor is to help parents understand the child’s difficulties and help that family negotiate the children’s mental health system in order for the youngster to receive optimal treatment. The Parent Advisor helps to forge relationships between the family and all components of the network of care, and to connect the family to other parents for support and assistance.

Research has consistently shown Family Advocacy to be an evidence-based practice. Enhanced parental satisfaction and improved linkages to services are two positive outcomes of programs that offer family support services. Parents who understand their rights and responsibilities in accessing mental health services for their children experience a sense of empowerment, can formulate better decisions in relation to the child’s needs, and can advocate for public policies and the systems enhancement. The Office of Mental Health has consistently supported the development of family Advocate positions around the state and is committed to the ongoing development of a strong parent advocacy network.
