Smart Traffic Camera InitiativeDescription: This Smart Traffic Camera Initiative will provide traffic count data for vehicles, pedestrians, and bicycles. The system uses AI to track near misses with traffic conflicts to identify risks and allow the agency to enact mitigation measures before the near misses become crashes. With the new crosswalks to be constructed in the Q2021 project, the cameras may also be used to activate the Rapid Rectangular Flashing Beacons (RRFB’s), an important pedestrian safety measure, rather than solely relying on a push button activation. There is a known vehicular crash pattern around the installation from historic data as documented in the Safety Analysis for Q2021 and its progenitor 47330. This initiative will provide more current data that the agency can use to measure the improved safety performance of the arterial ring roads when Q2021 installs positive protective barrier and lane reductions countermeasures to mitigate the known crashes and inform additional actions to make the system as safe as practical. People are currently crossing the roadways in a random fashion, and this initiative along with the proposed physical improvements help ensure a safe and comfortable facility serving the Harriman Campus tenants and public access to the Patroon Creek area businesses and residences.
